by arash_jaggi Mon Dec 06, 2010 1:34 pm

Hi I have taken the GMAT on 1/12/2010 and scored 650 quantitative:49 & Verbal: 28. I have a work experience in an asset management company for 3.5 years. I also have a family business with a turnover of more than INR 20cr. I already have a master's degree in marketing. I want to pursue MBA finance from one of the below mentioned university. Kindly help me with my chances in one of the universities.

NUS- Singapore
NTU- Singapore
HKU- Hongkong
University of Toronto: Rotman
Rice: Jones Graduate School of Business
University of Rochestor: Simon
University of Southern California:Marshall

I was a member of Student committee during my PGDBM,and was prefect in my School.
Have worked with a NGO to spread education awareness among Rural/Tribal people.

Should i focus completely on my business while wiriting the applications or mention about my work experience post MBA, marketing.

Kindly help me with the same.

Thanks
Arash

Hi Arash,

Thanks for writing. I suggest you focus on your holistic work experience, and emphasize the aspects that you feel are most relevant to your MBA application.

I am not familiar with the Asian schools you list, but for the North American ones I'm concerned about your GMAT breakdown. A 29 Verbal is right around the 50 percentile mark, and I think that is going to be tough to overcome at these schools. You may want to see if practice tests indicate a retake would help raise your Verbal score.

Your post-school extracurricular work sounds potentially interesting as well, and you may want to highlight that as a differentiation point.

Good luck!

Thanks daniel for helping me with my profile evaluation. Can a good TOEFL score be used to compensate for my low verbal score?

Hi again,

This question comes up frequently. It's my take that it can help a little but not significantly, as the two are not interchangeable.
