by dhaval04 Fri Oct 29, 2010 7:04 am

Thanks mbaMission for taking time to evaluate profiles on this forum. Your efforts are much appreciated.

I have gone through lot of evaluation posted on this forum and I feel that my individual profile is covered in various pieces in several other profiles, still I would like your valuable feedback on my specific questions.

First, many thanks in advance for evaluating my profile. My story and stats are below - could you please provide your guidance?

Personal:

Ethnicity/Gender: Indian/Male.
Age: 30

Academic Details:

Q: 50 - (93%)
V: 33 - (66%)
AWA: N/A

Work Experience:

Target schools:
Yale

Said

Questions/Concerns:
- The GMAT. I understand I belong to a most represented cohort. Given that, is my GMAT workable for my target schools? Other options are:
(a) Change my target schools and go down the rank. What are your recommended schools for my profile?
(b) Appear for GMAT again. I may be able to improve my score by another 20-30 points (690 currently).
- Am I too (at least quite above avg) old in terms of age and amount of experience?

Best regards,
Thanks in Advance.

Hi dhaval,

Happy to help where I can. Let's dive into your questions.

a/b) Your GMAT is likely within 20-80 range for these schools but below the median. As you point out -- you're in a heavily represented cohort and have shown you can do that quant work, but I would explore if retaking the GMAT and raising your verbal and overall seems possible. If you are looking for other schools to diversity your chances I suggest looking more at the top-25 range, perhaps adding schools similar to Maryland and Emory into the mix.

c) You are right that you will be among the older applicants in the pool. Age is one thing you can't control, and there's no way to make yourself younger. What you can do though is explain why you are seeking an MBA now and how it makes sense for your career path, and why you are seeking a second graduate degree.

Overall my other piece of advice is to remember that differentiation is everything when competing in an over-represented cohort. You need to write essays and frame a story that will make the admissions committee remember you and want you to join their class.

Good luck!

Thanks Daniel for your quick response.

I was just wondering how ad-com will take my more than average work experience and whether it will have any (+ve/-ve) correlation on my GMAT score.

As per my understanding conservative classification of schools may go like:
Non-reach (Tough to reach): Yale
Reach: Ross
Competitive: Oxford, Duke
Is this correct??

Dhaval

Hi Dhval,

In re: to your work experience, the admissions committee will likely want to see that your career plans still benefit from earning an MBA. I don't think your work experience will effect perception of your GMAT score though, as all students will have to handle the same level of work once in the program.

I think your classification of the schools is about right, though I think you may be just as competitive at Yale as you would be at Ross.
