Profile Evaluation Request: High Gmat / Low GPA

by cderman86 Thu May 31, 2012 12:25 am

Hello,

I am planning to apply to business school and was wondering what my odds might be and whether I should hold off for more work experience.

UG: Northwestern
Alternative Transcript: 4 A's in Grad Business classes at University of Chicago
Work Experience: 3 years, 1 in boutique Consulting firm, 2 doing project management & strategic operations at a top HFT firm.
Other: Volunteer as a tutor & serve on several Not for profit boards.

Leaning towards NYU Stern, Booth, Columbia, or maybe a school in the UK (LBS?). What would be appropriate reach, target and safety schools?

Any tips or thoughts on my chances would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi! I think you are ready to apply given that you have 3 years of work experience, which puts you in a good spot at many schools. Academically, your GMAT score is stellar while your grades are not. If you can explain why in an optional essay, that works in your favor. In addition, I think building your alternate transcript was a great idea and that will help you in the application process. In terms of your work experience and extra-curricular activities, in both areas I would stress where you took on roles of leadership and highlight your accomplishments, not your responsibilities. You want to build an application that shows you are different from other candidates coming from similar backgrounds or industries.

As for what schools are right for you, that is largely a personal preference. I think the schools you have listed here are within your range, but you also might consider adding a school or two that is slightly less competitive.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
