Profile evaluation request 620 GMAT 3.7 GPA

by karthik.sreeni Sat Aug 18, 2012 10:24 am

Hi,

Could you please suggest me the range of schools that I am likely to get? Following is a brief of my profile.

I graduated from University of Madras in 2004 with a B.E degree specializing in Computer science and Engineering with a 3.7 GPA. I had some great opportunities in the IT industry working for start-up companies focusing on products for a period of 6 yrs till 2010. This also includes working as a chief software designer for an ATM manufacturing company, Vortex Engineering, supposedly the fourth largest ATM manufacturing company in the world next to NCR, Diebold and Wincor.
In 2010, I chose to diversify my experience venturing into retail in the hospitality sector, where I was the co-founder of a private limited company. The company was found with profound social objectives in providing affordable and competitive solutions towards various social needs of the community. So far, we have delved into creating successful brands in retail food chain, industrial kitchen and primary school education.
I gave my GMAT on the 16th of August 2012 and got a score of 620 ( Scaled score Q-49, V-25 ). I am looking to apply for a full time MBA in one of the top 50 schools. I also prefer a school where there is a scope for some financial aid.
I thank you in advance for your time in understanding my profile and hope your reply throw some light to my app.

Hi there,

Thanks for your bio. Your entrepreneurial experience is definitely impressive and will go a long way in strengthening your application. Unfortunately, your GMAT score is quite low for the top programs -- is there any chance of retaking it and improving your scores? If so, I'd advise that you do so, as you have a really strong professional leadership/entrepreneurial story that would be competitive at top schools if accompanied by a strong score. The top tier programs will want to ideally see a score of 700+... is that at all feasible?

If it's not a reality to retake the test or to improve your score much, then I'd suggest you aim for programs in the top 20-50 range. You might consider a school like Darden or UCLA as a stretch school caliber, and target schools like Tepper, Indiana, etc. If you're interested in continuing on the entrepreneurship track, you might consider a program like Babson. Other safeties could be in the range of Georgetown.

Hopefully that helps you hone in on a range of schools... as to which specific schools you should apply to, that needs to be a personal decision based on your own criteria.

One thing to consider: why do you need an MBA? You've got quite a strong career history and really high level professional experience, and eight years under your belt (on the high end for full time MBAs) - why do you really need an MBA to reach your next goal? I think this is something you'll get pushed on in the application process.

Financial aid is more difficult to attain as an international student. Not sure if you are still in India, but if so, it will be more difficult to qualify for financial aid. You can seek a merit scholarship, perhaps, but you'll have to research each school individually to see which have scholarship opportunities.

Good luck!
Mili
