Profile Evaluation Questions

by pmiklius Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:55 pm

I have some basic questions on my profile,

I am 24 year old male who is planning to apply to B-Schools for fall of 2013. I am currently preparing for the GMAT, I have been improving steadily since I started and am now getting around 670's on practice tests. I am fairly confident when I am finished preparing I will get around a 700.

My profile - Graduated with a 3.75 from Purdue University in Hospitality and Tourism Management (top 2 school in the US for this major). I know it is a not a typical major for MBA schools but I graduated with a good GPA, did very well in all of my accounting/finance classes (all A's). I also had a minor in design/consulting for the Hospitality industry.

Upon graduation I worked as a manager at a resort for a year, then took a job as a hospitality consultant doing mostly design work for restuarants and hotels (curently for a year but plan to keep working for another year and a half until 2013 fall). I am curently starting a transition for training for a promotion.

My goal upon getting an MBA to move into the consulting/marketing fields, most likely for hospitaltiy industries as I have background and experience in this industry.

I am involved in volunteering at some places but not to many organizations. I plan on joining some additional professional organizations in the near future (most likely after my GMAT Prep and test).

Provided that I can achieve around the 700 mark what types of schools should I be looking into? I would love to attend a top 5 to 10 school but am concerned on my lack of quant in school and workplace. Would more of a top 25 schools such as Emory be more realistic?

What types of schools should I look into if I don't achieve a 700 ,more in the range of a 650 to 670?

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! If you can get your score up to a 700, I think you could apply to a top school and be a contender. What you have going for you is the fact that you come from an industry that isn't overpopulated in business schools. That's an important differentiator, which helps you stand out from the crowd. What will be important for you is your ability to articulate to the AdCom why you want an MBA and what your career goals are. I encourage you to make a list of what skills you have from your career to date, what skills you will need for your future career and how business school will fill in the blanks. I like that you have grown in your job, something very important to the AdCom, and already have some outside activities. Remember, it's not about how many organizations you are involved in outside of work, but what kind of impact you have on the ones you are working for.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
