Profile evaluation please!

by schiel.andrew Mon Sep 21, 2009 12:55 pm

Hi,

I recently took the GMAT and got a 700 (87% Q, 73% V). I graduated from a top liberal arts college in December of '05 with a 3.2 GPA. I was an all american basketball player and team captain in college and continue to play four times a week in various leagues.

What I'm worried about is my work experience. For the past three years I have been living in Los Angeles, working in various capacities within the entertainment world- post production asst., asst. camera, etc- while pursuing writing. Not exactly in the 'business world'. Will this cripple my application?

I view business school as a chance to radically change my stagnant life, further my education, and pursue greatness in a different sphere. If I were to apply to top 25 schools, would I have a chance to get in? Do they admit students with these types of work experiences? Will upping my GMAT score better my chances (i routinely scored in the 98% in the verbal section in practice tests)?

Appreciate the advice!

Andrew

Hi Andrew -

Thanks for your inquiry. There's one key piece missing from your profile though which will make all the difference in my answer - why do you want to go to business school? What are your goals? Schools don't want students who are unfocused and undirected, and they want to see a logical connection between past and future.

That doesn't mean you have to stay in the entertainment industry though! Think about what you want to do, what skills/talents you need to do it, and then look back to see where in your past you have started to learn those skills. For example, as a basketball player and captain, you have clearly demonstrated outstanding teamwork, motivation and leadership skills - critical for any career. As an independent contractor in L.A., you have demonstrated a capacity for risk-taking. Pursuing writing for a few years (so why the lower GMAT V score?) shows that you can be passionate and committed to something even in the face of external pressure to find something more typical (which my guess is you faced). I'm sure there are more. If you can define a clear goal and then demonstrate how elements of your past fit with that goal, then your application may really stand out from the pack.

Best of luck,
