by sam Fri Aug 15, 2008 6:53 pm

GMAT: 750
GPA: 2.7 (Degrees: Computer Science, B.S., Economics with emphasis in Math, B.A., Minor: History of Art and Architecture - all in 4 years)

To try to compensate for my gpa I recently completed 3 Finance course at a local college - my grades are all A's.

Work experience:

4 years by fall 2009:

2 years in the professional services organization of a software startup. (Got promoted once.)
2 years in a boutique consulting firm that got acquired by a Fortune 500 company.

Extracurricular:

Lead an outdoors club - organize hikes, camping trips, bike rides, etc... - 2 years.
Belong to a sailing cooperative. Here I volunteer to teach others, help fix boats, and sail of course!

I plan to apply to the following part-time programs:

Haas Evening and Weekend
UCLA Fully Employed MBA
Chicago GSB Evening and Weekend
NYU Stern - Langone Part-time
Indiana Kelley Direct

What are my chances?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your inquiry.

It is a good thing that you did so well on the GMAT. Between your GMAT score and your new grades, you should be able to recover from your poor undergraduate performance. I think that if you can get strong recommendations attesting to your professional performance, particularly in your latter position, you should be quite competitive at the part time programs listed. Generally, part-time programs are cash cows for the schools and are not nearly as discerning. This is not to take anything away from you. My point is that even with limited knowledge of your background, I would be confident that you could find a home amid these programs based on consulting experience (with recs) , GMAT and leadership (outdoor and sailing group).

Is there anything else that I can do to improve my application? I feel like my GPA really sets me back.

Thanks.
