Profile Evaluation please

by amalor87 Mon Mar 19, 2012 11:11 pm

I am hoping to gain some insight into how I can improve my application. I would like to apply to Stanford, Harvard, Wharton, MIT and INSEAD. I would really appreciate some honest feedback and suggestions for improving my chances at these schools.

Education:
University of Maryland, College Park, BS in Electrical Engineering
GPA 3.74
Johns Hopkins University, MS in Electrical Engineering
GPA 4.0

Work History:
Worked during school part to full time in engineering companies, took job at defense contractor after school, where I have been for the last 2.5 years, where I have been promoted to Project Manager since starting. By the time of application I will have ~2 years in engineering, 2.5 years in project management and ~6 months in management consulting (switching jobs at the moment). I have my PMP credential (project management license).

GMAT: 710 (Q47V41) - I am struggling with whether to retake this - I scored 720-740 on practice, and I know I can get 750+. I am not sure if this is worth the effort. Will my low quant score be compensated for by my advanced technical degree?

Extracurriculars: This is a bit of a problem area - did Varsity Rowing in UnderGrad, didn't have much time for community service for last 2.5 years because I was getting my Masters. Currently do pro bono financial advising for friends and family (help with managing 401(k)s) as well as pro bono strategy consulting for friends with businesses.

Background: Plan to use the background angle during apps - first generation Russian-American, pursuing American Dream, etc.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hi! Let's start with your GMAT score. Your overall score is good, but if you think you can boost it, I would take it again. It can't hurt, and if you get a higher score, it can only help your candidacy. It sounds like you have strong professional experiences, with solid evidence of growth through your career so far. My best advice is to highlight your accomplishments, not responsibilities, in your work, and look for stories that are engaging and compelling to tell. As for your extra-curriculars, these are OK - I like the financial advising that you do, but I would also love to see a little community work. You still have time to add that - look for things you can get involved with now and have an impact asap (you really want to show leadership through your extra-curriculars, too).

As for your story about being a first generation in the US and living the American dream, look for ways to set your story apart from others who might share similar experiences.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
