Profile Evaluation Please

by terence.battle1 Tue May 03, 2011 8:54 pm

Hello and thank you! I'm currently studying for my GMAT on June 24th. My most recent practice test I scored a 660 on and think that over the next 7 weeks I should be able to break the 700+ cusp. With that being said I am hoping to make a career change from corporate finance into consulting and have determined an MBA is the logical stepping stone to opening the doors into MCing.

My profile:
Undergraduate GPA - 3.93 Summa Cum Laude from a small private school in NY (Marist) I did get one D in Chemistry prior to my transfer into this university that I'm unsure how it will effect me.

GMat: Aiming 700+

Work Experience - prior to my undergraduate I worked as a restaurant manager/trainer for a well-known corporate chain over 2 years. Currently I work large tech company and have just taken my second promotion in 18 months and will have over 2.5 years of experience here by time of matriculation. I started as a financial analyst, took a promotion to global consolidation, and now am the lead consolidator for a brand within our software division.

Volunteer - I mentor new hires at my current company as well as co-ops. I served as a board member to a youth organization when I lived in Minnesota and try to keep engaged with my companies volunteer programs.

I will be 27 at time of matriculation.

I'm aiming for Tuck as my number one choice. Columbia would be my second choice followed then by Cornell or NYU. Based on my profile how competitive will I be in round 1 at Tuck?

Thanks!

Hi Terence,

Thanks for writing in. Let's assume you are able to get that 700. The adcom will still want to see what differentiates you from the other candidates, as finance-->consulting, and vice-versa, is a fairly common career path at these Tier 1 schools. I suggest emphasizing your early career success, as well as your volunteer activities, although I would need to know more about this involvement to comment more accurately. You'll also need to make sure you really flesh out your short/long-term goals, and explain which skills you expect an MBA to give you to make this change.

I would label Tuck and Columbia as "near-reach", and NYU and Cornell as "competitive."

Best of luck!

Daniel, thank you for the prompt response. I am attending a session at Tuck on June 3rd to meet with the adcom as well as taking a tour of the campus and such. I'm hoping that while I'm there I can get a feel for how my relative work experience (just shy of 2 years at application and 3 years at matriculation) is going to effect me in terms of their average of 5 years. I'm hoping that my management experience within the restaurant industry is going to help shine through for overall development and leadership experience.

The GMAT goal I'm really pushing for and realize that it is really in my hands to do what it's going to take on test day. I've been very focused the last six weeks studying and have seven more until D-Day! It's comforting to have an evaluation of atleast near-reach at Tuck since that's my top choice. Also given my relative age and profile does Harvard seem logical? I would still attend Tuck if admitted but knowing Harvard has slightly less emphasis on the duration of experience I think may help as a back-up?

For my extracurricular I mentor and help new hires with their transition into the workplace and the new dynamics that it entails. While in Minnesota I helped transition employees who were relocating from around the country to help with the overall adjustment. As a mentor/board member the organization is for students of all races to have a safe and productive academic working environment. We assist with teaching kids computer skills, helping with class work, and providing overall guidance and serve as a role model.

Thanks!

Hi again,

In re: to Harvard, it is true that HBS will give consideration to less-experienced candidates, and there is even anecdotal reasons to believe that this trend is spreading to other schools. But HBS is still among the most-desired and most-competitive programs in the world, so you will likely need to give that application your full effort if you want a chance to be admitted, even if it is a backup to Tuck for you.

Best of luck,
