Profile Evaluation please!

by reigndeerz Thu Feb 24, 2011 10:57 pm

Hi,

I have currently completed my GMAT, with a score of a 760 (50Q, 41V), and am aiming to enrol for the Fall 2012 MBA programs of either of the following schools: Harvard, MIT (Sloan), Yale, Wharton, Michigan (Broad).

The following would be my profile for application:
Undegrad GPA: Engineering Grad with a 3.2 GPA from a National University of Singapore (Ranked Top 10 worldwide for Engineering)
Work Experience: 3 years at time of matriculation. Currently working for a Government Agency in the defense sector as a project engineer/manager.
Extra Curriculum: Nothing notable to speak of, except for being on several committees in my local church.
References: Probably nothing outstanding.

Any advice whether I am being realistic with my applications for the abovementioned 5 schools?

Thanks!

Hi reigndeerz,

Thanks for writing in. With a stellar GMAT score like yours, the door is certainly open at these top programs ( I think you mean Michigan Ross?) So the question then becomes -- why are you seeking an MBA, and can you make it clear in your essays why you are seeking the degree at these schools. What in your work experience shows glimpses of your potential leadership? How can you add an MBA toolkit to your existing skills to set yourself up for success?

I'd also suggest that you take a look at your extracurricular activities to see if there's more there than you're giving yourself credit for. If you indeed serve on several committees, then you've probably had to exhibit leadership, deal with conflict, etc. It's always good to have examples to draw on outside of the office.

Good luck!
