Profile Evaluation help please

by cshen62 Wed May 20, 2009 1:38 am

Hi. I am looking for any feedback. Thanks.

Age: 25
Undergrad: Purdue University, degree in Business Mgmt., GPA: 3.23/4.00
Years of work exp: 2.5 yrs.
I interned while I was in college as a finance intern at UBS Financial Services
1 yr 9 months at State Street Corp. as a Portfolio Accountant, promoted to Senior level after about 1 yr.
currently at a small consulting firm as a financial analyst for about 7 months.
GMAT: 680 taken in 2005, 36 V, 47 M

References: My supervisor/boss at my old job, and possibly an events coordinator at the United Way center that I volunteer at.

I am looking at a top 20 school, specifically UCLA/USC/west coast/east coast. Berkeley is most likely out of my range so I don't think I'll bother.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Hello,

It seems as though you have a positive trajectory in your career, receiving a promotion after one year at your first job. I recommend that you convey the differences in the work that you do now in terms of responsibilities and/or exposure to clients at the boutique accounting firm. If you haven’t already been able to make significant contributions at your current job, you still have 4-5 months (before the first round deadlines) to take on new projects or otherwise show leadership at your new firm.

Please see my response to the previous post regarding GMAT percentiles and shoring up any weaknesses in your academic performance that might exist. If you are planning to request a letter of recommendation from someone at the United Way, it seems as though you have significant community service experience. If you do not feel that you have enough to write about outside of work, I might consider taking on additional leadership roles at the United Way.

Lastly, a clearly articulated and credible career goal is something that you should spend the next few months thinking about, if you have not done so. Best of luck to you!

Sincerely,
Akiba Smith-Francis
