Profile Evaluation:GMAT 680 with 4y oversea work experience

by shinebluehch Wed Sep 18, 2013 2:58 pm

Hi,
I have a sort of unique profile and really need some help to evaluate my chance for B-schools, thanks. I’m a Chinese male with 4 years oversea working experience in Africa. I’m currently a senior site manager and responsible for managing the building of new substations for electrical transmission project in one African country. My job functions include solving the technical issues on site, coordinating the relationship among contractors, suppliers, local project owners etc. and managing three junior site managers to ensure meeting the timeline of the project.

Some other backgrounds:
-GMAT first take in 2013: 680 (Verbal: 31 Quantitative: 50), probably don’t have time to retake since intensive oversea projects and need time to work on essays since it’s close to the R1&R2 application deadlines.
-Undergraduate major: Electrical Engineering in a reputed Chinese university.
-GPA: 3.2/4.0. With a lot of quantitative courses and programming courses
-Age: 26.
-Some extracurricular leadership service within company

I know my GMAT is a little bit low in the Chinese pool, so I would shoot for 20-40 ranked B-Schools such as U of Washington (Foster), OSU, ASU, Maryland, UC-Davis, UC-Irvine etc. My interested concentration is operational management and supply chain management.

Please let me know your opinion of my profile and also if you have any suggestions for schools I targeted. Any suggestion for my application is welcome. Looking forward to your advice. Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for posting. I think generally you have a less common profile, so it has a better chance of getting noticed, being Chinese working in Africa with a supply chain/operations interest. The 680 is alright though that combined with the large pool of engineering applicants might make top 10 a stretch, yes. But any schools with average scores of 650-680 could be considered, so you could add a reach school in the 15-20 or so range IF there's one you are really excited about.

For operations/supply chain strengths, you could look at Kelley, McCombs or Tepper as a reach school, Ga Tech (Scheller), Fisher, Broad (Mich State).

Have a look at those and focus on what you are most interested in at a school-- consider geographic region, setting, class size, curriculum, student culture, etc. Good luck on the process!
