Profile Evaluation (GMAT 630)

by ajitvsudn Tue Nov 08, 2011 12:38 am

Hello,

I just took the GMAT today and scored a 630 (Q42, V35). Although the splits are close to being balanced, the overall score is not where i wanted it to be. But i guess this is the best i could manage with my work load and my other responsibilities.

Nevertheless, I am considering applying to the US business schools, and would like to know your inputs. Below is my profile in a nutshell;

GMAT Score - 630

Education : Masters in Computer Science (USA)- NJIT (GPA 3.5)
Bachelors in Computer Science (India) - VTU (GPA 3.6)

Work Experience: 4 years as a computer programmer (currently positioned as a lead)
I am also part of a start up company, developing a new product.

Target schools:UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Dartmouth, MIT, Georgia Tech.

I plan to make my application strong by sighting my masters, work ex, start up, top recommendation letters, and ofcourse, well rounded essays. Just wondering if it should do the trick :)

thanks
-Ajit

Hi Ajit,

Thanks for writing in. You can certainly point to your start-up work and product development as ways to differentiate you from the crop of Indian candidates with technical backgrounds, but I do think that your GMAT score is going weigh you down significantly. A 630 is at the bottom , or outside of, the middle-80% range of all the schools you list, which means 10% or fewer of candidates are getting admitted with a similar score. In order to be part of that 10% you need to have an excellent goal statement and compelling reasons why each program can help you achieve those goals. I would recommend selecting 1-2 schools from this list (perhaps Georgia Tech and Carnegie), and diversifying your chances with a few more options where your GMAT is more competitive.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
