Profile Evaluation: GMAT- 610

by gary.stolper Wed Nov 03, 2010 4:47 pm

Hi-

I was hoping you could help assess my profile.

I recently scores a 610 on my GMATS
(Math: 36/43%; Verbal: 83/83%)
This was my second attempt at the test, as I scored a 590 the first time around.

I originally attended Ithaca College and after 2 years, transferred to Cornell University. My GPA at Ithaca was approximately 3.6

I graduated from Cornell University in 2007 with a BS in Industrial and Labor Relations. My GPA at Cornell was approximately 3.35. While there I was the president/founder of the Cornell Sports Management Club, as well as being actively involved in other extracurricular clubs.

After graduation, I worked for Ernst and Young doing HR consulting for approximately three years. I did a great amount of quantitative work while at this company, which can be supported in my letters of recommendation. Additionally, I never scored bellow a B- in any math course taken during college, which included high level calculus and statistics.

I am targeting the following schools:
- Indiana
- UNC
- Texas at Austin
- Maryland
- Vanderbilt
- BU
- GW
- Oxford

From your experience, do you think I should be able to get into these schools with my scores?

Thanks for all your help!

-Gary

Hi Gary,

Thanks for writing. While you seem to have some good work experience and overall college academics, I do think that your GMAT score (and its unbalanced nature) is going to be seen as a weakness at most of those schools.

You can definitely point to the quant work in your job and on your resume -- although when trying prove you can overcome quant GMAT deficiencies, you really want to be highlighting "A"s and maybe "B+"s, a "B-" grade would be somewhat in line with your GMAT score.

Without knowing much about your leadership/extracurriculars, and post-MBA plans, I think you would be most competitive on that list at GW and BU, and likely in the mix at Maryland and Vanderbilt as well.

Good luck!
