by donrules_don Thu Oct 25, 2012 1:56 pm

Professional Experience:

I am Working as a software developer and have 26 months of professional experience.
My project deals with UK clients. Though I haven't been to UK but I interact with my clients (Business analysts/Business owners) and onshore team and do my work independently.
I have been awarded with Applause in few months of joining the project and I have been given Highest rating (given to the best performer in my office).
I have also been involved in office annual functions.
I have been Mentoring the freshers and new joiners in the office.
Also, I have been involved in imparting Internal Soft Skills training to the office employees.
Apart from this, I am also involved in my family business.

Educational Background:
I have completed my Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science & Technology in 2010 and scored 76%
I have scored 82% in 12th and 83% in 10th.
I have won number of accolades for dance performances and academics in the school. I have scored a 100% in Mathematics in my 12th grade.
I am also learning French.

GMAT
I scored 610 (Quant-49, verbal-24) which is a very low score. Though I am planning to retake it, but because of very busy schedule in office, I am unable to prepare for the test.
I would request you to evaluate my profile and share the list of B-Schools in which I can apply.
Country Preference:
1. Asia
2. Canada
3. US

Also, please let me know my chances of admission in York-Schulich, Canada.
I would like to pursue my MBA in International Business!!

Thanks & Regards
Karan

Hi,

Plz have a look at my profile and suggest if I should give GMAT a shot.

Class X -83%, CBSE
Class XII-82%, CBSE
Graduation(Engineering)-74%, from a govt. college
Work Ex- 2 years, IT
Extra-curricular--- National level Gold medalist in hand ball during school days, Participated in various sports, trained in martial arts.

Do I have any chance of getting into some top-most b-schools, if I have a good GMAT score?
I feel my acads are very low.

Please suggest if it's worth giving a try

Regads,
Nabajyoti Talukdar

Hi Karan,

Thanks for the reminder and sorry for the delayed response. I would say that your academic profile is weak due to your GMAT (your undergrad scores are average). Your professional experience is good within your field, but also sounds very similar to the type of experience other Indian engineers have when they apply to MBA programs. While you were active in dance/extracurriculars in college, it doesn't seem like you've kept it up too much. The family business experience could be interesting, but it really depends on the scale of it and what your role is.

You could look at the India Institute for Foreign Trade, maybe, HKUST, NUS... the average scores for these programs are between 640-660, so you'd still be in the low ranges, but might be worth a shot. I'm not as familiar with Canadian programs, unfortunately, but Schulich may be a stretch with a 610. As for US, I would suggest aiming at lower Tier 2 programs -- Wake Forest, University of Iowa, SMU, etc.

I hope this helps as a starting point. Good luck!

Thanks Mili for your valuable comments.
So do you think I stand good chances in HKUST and NUS at this score. And could you please tell whether I am suitable for CUHK and Nanyang for this score. Please provide the average GMAT score for these two B-schools as well.

Hello Karan,

I believe you should be able to look up the average GMAT scores for these programs. I do not have access to any information besides what is listed on their websites and 3rd party rankings.

As I mentioned, I think you could try to apply to HKUST and NUS, but I wouldn't say you have a "good chance" - it's a chance, though :).

Unfortunately, I'm not as familiar with the nuances of the Asia-Pac programs as I am with US programs; sorry not to be more helpful!

Best of luck,
Mili

Hi Mili
I have taken the GMAT again and have scored 680. So now again, I would like to seek your help. Could you please advise some good B-Schools at this profile and score in US and Canada and those which can provide scholarships. I am interested in pursuing MBA in IB/ Consulting/ General Management.
Till now I have applied to Thunderbird.
Also could you please advise which country will be best in terms of ROI and job opportunities in this current recession scenario.

Hi Karan,

With a 680 GMAT and 2 years of IT experience, I would suggest you aim for lower tier 1 and tier 2 programs. Perhaps programs in the range of Indian Kelley, Texas McCombs, Maryland. It's difficult to choose programs for you out of thin air without knowing more about what you are looking for. Scholarship opportunities will be difficult...

I suggest you do some serious research on the different programs, the profiles of the students at those schools. If you present me with a short list of programs you are considering applying to, I can give you better guidance.

Good luck,
Mili

Hi Mili
Thanks for your valuable feedback again. :)

Just to correct, I would be having 3 years of experience in IT till the time I apply.
I am considering applying to following B schools:
1. Texas A & M
2. University Of Illinois Urbana Champagne
3. Georgetown McDonough
4. Kelley
5. Rotman University, Canada

Please share your thoughts on these schools regarding my admission chances, scholarship chances, ROI and job opportunities.

Hello Karan,

I can't comment on ROI, but I think you have a good range of programs here given your profile. Good luck.
