Profile Evaluation 730/IBD

by sukrit8 Fri Aug 24, 2012 5:27 am

Hi, could you please evaluate my profile below and let me know (i) whether I should retake the GMAT for a better score? (ii) Or shall i spend time improving my application for B-schools both in US and Asia? (Kindly please let me know how can I improve my extracurricular section) (iii) Any particular school I should target with my profile?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

- Nationality: Indian
- Gender: Male
- Undergrad GPA: First class (69.1%), BE Civil Engineering, University of Delhi (DCE)
- Work Experience: 2 years investment banking at a bulge bracket bank (Would like to pursue a career in IB post MBA)
- Extracurricular: Part of organizing council of annual inter college festival at undergrad level (Please advice how I can improve this particular section)
- Timeline: target to apply fall 2012 (debating R1 vs. R2)
- Target schools: ISB, Darden, Booth, Columbia, NYU (please advice in case some particular school would be fit for my profile)
- GMAT scores: 730 (Q49/V40) I could have done better as I ran out of time in both sections. I scored 750+ in my GMAT prep tests do you suggest I should spend further time on retaking GMAT or rather utilize it to improve my extra curricular activities?

Many thanks!

Hello!

I don't think you need to spend time retaking the GMAT - a 730 score is very strong and I don't think that a 750 will greatly alter your outcomes. I'd suggest focusing on your applications instead!

As for how to improve your extracurricular activities - that is going to be tough at this late stage in the game. I suggest that you comb through your personal experiences and see if there are any transformative stories that reveal your character or reveal more about who you are. Maybe you climbed Mt. Everest, or you overcome some great hardship. Maybe you informally mentored an underprivileged child. Ask yourself - have I had a positive and profound impact on someone's life? If so, that could help show more depth of character and personality.

Also think about your hobbies - how do you like to spend your time outside of work? Can you weave these into your essays (as metaphors, analogies, anecdotes), in such a way that they start to give you some additional dimensionality in your profile?

I think your school list is pretty solid - obviously focused on finance/banking programs but you have a very nice range from NYU/Darden to Booth/Columbia. Have you considered any UK programs (LBS?) In the U.S., Cornell could be a good safety school for you.

Hope this helps,
Mili
