Profile Evaluation - 710 (Q - 49, V - 37)

by rakesh.gidwani Sun Jul 31, 2011 12:20 pm

Educational Background:
BE Computer Engineering , Pune University
MS Computer Science, Clemson University

Work Experience Total 8 years
Independent IT Consultant since October 2003,
Provided IT consultancy services to
Top financial firms (Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley)

GMAT: 710 (92nd percentile) (Q 49 (85th Percentile), V37(81st Percentile)

Target Schools: Wharton, Booth, Columbia, Tuck, Duke, Darden

I still need to do some research on the schools. Harvard was on my list earlier, but with a 710 it looks out of reach.

Experts, can I please get a profile evaluation.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rakesh

Thanks for writing in. Unfortunately I see a few things that are likely to work against you in your application.

1) Your background -- Indian males w/ IT background are an overrepresented cohort, and thus you will immediately be compared to others in this group. The key to fighting this classification is to differentiate yourself -- what it is it about your experience or goals that stand out and would be interesting to your application reviewer?

2) Your age. I'm estimating you're about 31, which is a few years above the median age of the entering class at all of those schools, and the trend among schools is to actually go younger. The way to address this is to explain in your essays why your career plans to date have made sense, and why NOW is the right time to get an MBA.

I do think it will be an uphill battle at those schools, I suggest adding another school or two in the top-20/top-25 range to diversify your chances.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
