Profile Evaluation 700, limited professional experience

by irina Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:01 pm

Hello,

Please consider my profile:

GMAT 700 (49Q, 36V, 4.0AWA)
GPA 3.75 (BS from Rutgers University- New Brunswick, double major Finance and German Lang.&Lit., minor Russian Lang.&Lit.)

Study Abroad in Berlin (summer semester after junior year)
Languages: native Russian, advanced German.

Professional Experience:
4 years
Accounting Assistant at a large German telecommunications corporation (manage accounts receivable/payable, reconcile bank statements, provide financial report/analysis as needed, etc.)

Additional:
took several German Lang. courses at NYU Deutsches Haus (courses open to general public, not NYU enrolled students),
volunteered at Red Cross Blood Drives (sponsored by NJ Devils and Rangers Ice Hockey Teams),
hobbies - Tennis Club, Figure Skating, hiking & camping.

I am planning to apply to Columbia, NYU and Wharton MBA Programs, but I am concerned about my limited work experience... I am also considering Fordham University and Baruch (as my safety). Are these realistic targets?

Would you suggest other schools/programs (may be MS) in NY/NJ area?

Thank you. Your response will be highly appreciated.

Hi! I think you list of schools are realistic given your profile. One thing that I think will be key to your application is how you present your work experience. You will need to really showcase your accomplishments, not responsibilities, at work, and highlight times when you have shown leadership potential by using examples of taking risks or initiative or making decisions. Also, figure out what skills you have built in your career to date, and how do they relate to what you want to do post-MBA. In addition, look at your extra-curricular activities and see where you have taken on leadership roles in those as well. The AdComs aren't just looking for candidates that show up to activities, but play an active role. As for your GMAT score, that seems to be in the range of the schools where you want to apply. Your grades are also solid.

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck

Dear Rachel,

Thank you for your feedback!

Another question, regarding my resume. My current job is my only full-time experience. During college I worked part-time at a retail clothing store as a sales associate and at a small orthopedic office, where I mainly processed insurance claims and billed patients. Should I list these experiences on the resume?

Thank you.

Work you did in college doesn't need to be on your resume if you have enough experience post-undergrad, which you do.
