Profile evaluation 680 q49 v34

by urospajic Thu Dec 16, 2010 2:36 pm

Hi,

25 y/o, Eastern European male here.

GPA - 3.46 (local state university) - Management in IT degree
GMAT - 680 (q 49, v 34) (quite disappointed w/ the verbal score)
4 years of full time work experience (worked while studying) as a manager of a web development company with partnerships with a couple of us and eu based companies (got them to write me recommendations)
Also have been involved for several years with a NGO which promotes minority human rights.

I am aiming for HBS and UCLA.

Can you please evaluate my profile?

Also I have a question, does it pay off to put membership in MENSA into the application, just in order give a clue about one's potential?
I'm not that into retaking the GMAT so need something to compensate for the below the median score.

Thanx much!

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in. When dealing with a below-median GMAT, you need to draw on your other strengths to make it clear that you will be a successful candidate. In the limited information you provide, it seems that your best point of differentiation is your NGO work. Does this tie into your post-MBA goals at all? Either way, you should make sure one of your essays focuses heavily on this work.

You can mention MENSA in the other "activities" section of your resume or in the short-answer, but I'm not sure it's going to have much of an impact, beyond just showing club involvement.

As for your schools, I think HBS is a reach based on your academics, and UCLA would be competitive, although your post-MBA goals will factor largely into your chances.

Good luck!

Hi,

thanx for the reply. I think I will apply for the round 3.

Just one question regarding the tie between the career goals and chances of admission - could you elaborate a bit please? This can be useful to other applicants also.

(Personally I did not plan to move to the NGO work after the MBA, rather in the field of international investment management.)

Thanx much,

Urosh.

Hi Urosh,

Sure -- I meant that how you present your post-MBA goals will be important into how the admissions board perceives you. Does your plan make sense? Did you show how it fits in well with your past experience and the MBA skills you'll learn? These are key points applicants often overlook, or don't spend enough time detailing in their essays.

There's also the issue of differentiation -- applicants who plan to go into less-represented fields will at least stick out in the admissions committee's minds, whereas someone going into a heavily-represented field needs to work harder to differentiate him/herself.

Hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards
