profile eval

by yzx27 Mon Mar 30, 2009 7:46 pm

Hi

I like to have my profile evaluated. I am going to apply to MBA for class of 2012. Here are my stats:

age: 26
College: Cornell Engineering
over all gpa 3.14 and major 3.2 graduated in 3.5 years and did a co-op and a internship.
GMAT: 690 (v 34, 69% q 49 88%) 4.5 on the writing
experience: 5 years when I apply
CFA level2 candidate

I have worked for a hedged fund doing operation and IT work for about 3 years. Now I am with a brokerage firm doing mostly back/middle office work. I also have my own real estate business. Also should I retake the gmat or is 690 good enough for the schools below?

what are my chances for the following schools:
CMU tepper, NYU sterns, Cornell Johnson, U Chicago, and UVA Darden

Thanks for your inquiry.

Thank you for your inquiry.

With the caveat that you have not indicated anything about your extracurriculars/community activities, it seems like your profile is a reasonable one for the schools you're considering. You have solid work experience as well as entrepreneurial experience and while your GPA is somewhat low, you did complete school on an accelerated pace and were in a faculty that tends to award fewer As, which can explain it. U. Chicago is a mild stretch but I would still encourage you to apply. If you feel that you have the time and can improve your score, I would recommend re-taking the GMAT, but you should certainly not be concerned about a 690.

If you have no extracurriculars/community experience because you've been busy with your work and your own business, you should focus on finding one or two activities that you can be passionate about and that may show another side of you. For example, if in your business all the work you do is team-oriented, find an activity where you can demonstrate leadership skills. You'll clearly have work stories you can pull on from multiple sources (2 companies and your own business) but you want to be sure to present a well-rounded profile to the schools.

Best of luck.

Sincerely,
Jessica Shklar
