I have a 640 GMAT with 3.07 GPA from a UC Davis in Econ

3 years work experience at the top bulge bracket

Applying to Haas (R2), Yale (R2), UCLA (R2), Chicago (R1), Columbia (R1), NYU (R1)

Good extracurriculars (past and current)

Have worked with a consultant on my essays

Any thoughts on my chances at the above schools?

Alex, allow me. It's quite obvious what you're going to say. Let me know how I do.

Guest, you don't provide much to work with. Why is it that you want to go to business school? Why do you need an MBA from those schools? These are the things that you have to communicate to the adcom, not just your numbers.

What business schools are looking for are well-rounded people. Your numbers are only one part of the equation. You provide your GMAT score, GPA, and very general work experience. None of these things alone will differentiate you from other applicants, especially at the caliber of schools you mentioned. If your application is as brief as this post, you will certainly be rejected. That's not say you can't get in, but you have to demonstrate achievment in the real world. You have to make the adcom want to take a chance on you. What volunteer work have you done? Extra-curriculars? Interests?

Give me some more info. and I'll have a much better idea of what your chances are.

FillingIn,

I dig your sense of humor.

A lot of these "profile evaluations" are less a discovery process and more a reaffirmation of what they already know or suspect. Most people who've done some research can ballpark where they stand in terms of which tiers they're competitive for. But that doesn't stop people wanting some reassurance - it's human nature, which is perfectly fine and understandable.

To answer the original poster's question: from what little you wrote I suspect the reason why you're posting this is because you're concerned about your GPA and GMAT, and you're hoping that someone will say that it's okay or that an adcom will overlook both of them. Technically it's possible that a person with GMAT and GPAs that are both below the middle 80% (most top schools it's around 660-760 and 3.2 - 3.8 respectively) can get in, but in reality it's less probable. Even with exceptional essays, you still need a bit of luck on your side, especially considering that other bankers will have similar resumes as you but stronger scores. Not saying you can't get in, but as you might have suspected these two things are a significant handicap to your candidacy no matter what you do or how you spin it.

The good news: I got an interview with Chicago GSB. The bad news...I didn't use Alex's service. I used another.

Note to everyone that plans to use a consultant. Do your due diligence and choose wisely. I decided to go with someone that actually worked in admissions previously rather than just have some guys with MBAs from Wharton read my essays. I could get that from ppl at work for free.

If this thread shows you anything, its that consultants aren't always right. I haven't gotten into school yet...but I also haven't gotten dinged.

Cheers to not wasting my time "FillingIn"

Guest,

If you used another service why ask Alex his opinion? Me thinks you are not the original "Guest".

Yo yo

Its true there are a lot of good consulting co's out there. I don't know about MBA Apply but thanks Alex for your great service. However, you do have to see who you want to work with. Alex and Jeremy do a good service for us as they reply to people's profiles, but that doesn't mean they are experts...esp if this kid above got an interview at Chicago.

As for FillingIn - consultants aren't admissions committee. They really just help you fix a weaker profile if you reach out early enough...and if all you need help on are the essays then they will tweak those for you. They never say for sure if you will get in or not. So you thinks is maybe wrong?

If I used a consultant, I'd probably want more than one expert to let me know what they thought like Guest. So don't hate :)

Congrats to the guest and goodluck with Chicago! I really don't see the purpose of FillingIn wasting time with the negative attitude.

Cheers!

Also want to say Alex and Jeremy do a lot of posting. Stacey and Clearadmit...not so much. So that begs the question, why do Jeremy and Alex help us? Out of the good of their hearts??

A good AWA analysis of the issue question!
