Profile eval

by Guest Wed Apr 09, 2008 4:20 pm

Hi,

As I am trying to identify the schools for Fall 09, thought I would take the chance to get some external feedback.

Indian Male (hardly ever lived in India though, globetrotting life growing up) 25
Drexel University - degrees in Economics and Information Systems - 3.8 Cumulative, Major GPA both 3.9+
Several notable extracurricular achievements in University (starting clubs and leading them to national recognition, running University Budgetary Committe which gave out USD 1MN every year to students )
2 years of full time work exp with Big 4 in Canada (Consulting)
GMAT - on Apr 26th, but if practice tests are any indicators 720+ should be a possibility

I know off the abt that I am from a highly over represented demographic :) But I have a couple of things going for me; namely very International background - have lived and studied in over half a dozen countries, solid academic credentials.

So any thoughts on what schools might make sense given that I have a strong desire to move back to India in the medium term?

Thanks for your insights.

You seem to have a solid blue chip profile - strong grades, likely a strong GMAT, uninspiring but nonetheless credible work experience. Your "extras" will really make the difference for you. While you clearly have standout experiences from your college days, you don’t mention anything more contemporary. Have you been "quiet" for two years? Also, what led you to a life of travel and where did you live?

With a few additional pieces, I should be able to offer some more profound advice.

Sincerely,

I have lived in the following places:

France
Ivory Coast
India
Italy
USA
Canada

My father is a diplomat, hence the civilized nomad lifestyle for the first 18 or so years.

I have also visited dozens of other countries in the interim. Studied in several different schooling systems while growing up so pretty high on the adaptability meter.

Yes, I have been somewhat quiet since graduation (been tangentially involved in the creation of a new Canada India action group , but wont claim to have any central role in it), two reasons - moved to a new country and started from scratch and got married and consequently got a little distracted with that :)

Appreciate any insight you may have MBAMission

thanks

Thank you for the additional information.

I think that you should do your best to increase your involvement with the new organization in which you have been involved on a minor level. The absence of recent "extras," despite the fact that you have a remarkable college story that you may be able to use (and I stress MAY), will be problematic for you, because you come from such a competitive peer group. I think that it will be challenging for you to crack the top ten as your profile now stands. Unless your GMAT is remarkable and you really bolster your extras, you would probably be best off focusing on schools in the 10-15 range with a few safe school in the 15-20 range and maybe a reach in the top ten, depending on your risk profile.

Hmm that is a little deflating but thanks for your honesty. I feel as though I still have two cycles of apply to and see whether I can crack the top.

I appreciate the feedback and can work towards augmenting those 'deficiencies' in my overall package.

Anything else you can think of aside from GMAT and local involvement?

Thanks
