Profile Eval - HBS

by Guest Fri Jan 09, 2009 7:58 pm

Hi, wondering if you could give me your opinion on my R2 application to top choice HBS. My major concern is that I'm on the edge in terms of their age bias, but wondering if there are mitigating factors in my background.

27f (28 when entering) / 720 (95%V, 70%Q, 6.0AWA)

3.5 from Wellesley College, majors in Econ & Music

2 years i-banking analyst, then had a total change of heart and since then have been working for a non-profit, teaching arts curriculum in ballroom dance to public school kids in the Bronx. Promoted to a management role this year and now have 7 direct reports, while still teaching in schools.

Interesting extracurriculars; actually part-time jobs in which I teach flying trapeze & perform with a circus, and also teach for a firm that teaches valuation/modeling seminars at business schools (including HBS where I worked 3 times this year) as well as conducting all the new-hire training (analyst & associate) for most of the major banks.

"Paper" version of life story reads a little confusing, but the essays were winners. Is this an interesting background or are they just going to take someone from Teach For America instead?

Thanks!

Thank you for your inquiry.

I think that you should be competitive at HBS, but in a year like this, you are not a shoo-in (few are). No one could fault you for applying. Still, while your individual experiences are interesting, it will be important that you not show yourself as a "jack of all trades, master of none." The AdCom will need to get the sense that you are committed to excellence and personal development, not random experience. That should be achievable with strong essays.

Sincerely,
