"Professional Accomplishment" essay

by kschrinsky Wed Aug 12, 2009 4:32 pm

Hi there,

I have a few schools on my list that ask for essays on "your most significant professional accomplishment." I am most excited about my involvement in my company's Green Initiatives Committee (GIC), which is a story I will likely use in leadership essays for other schools. I would like to use this same story as my professional accomplishment essay since it is the most obvious way for me to show the impact I've made on my organization (and it's easier than writing a whole new essay), but am concerned that it's not "professional" enough since it's not a part of my actual job. Besides the goals essay, I will not really have another place to speak about my work experience in more detail, so I'm wondering if I should pick a different story that may not be quite as strong as far as concrete impact, or go with the GIC story and hope that they have enough about my job in my goals essay and resume. Can you please advise on this? Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for your question. It is a bit difficult to provide general advice on how to select which experiences to write about for each essay. It depends on the mix of questions asked within each application and the set of experiences you have to write about. I think that you are on the right track in terms of thinking about the experiences that you definitely want to share with the admissions committees, including the GIC story. You might have to play around with where you place that experience in each application. I also agree that you need to make sure that you include, somewhere in your essays, a true professional experience.

If, as you write, the only place to write about your professional experience is in the "goals essay," you should consider writing about the GIC experience in a different essay question where you have more flexibility. You can write about the same experience from a number of different angles. For example, you could write about the same experience in an essay about leading a team, solving a complex problem, enlisting others in your vision, etc... I hope that this helps you decide how to organize your experiences in the application.

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
