Problem help

by akgmat2013 Wed Jul 23, 2014 1:41 pm

What is the value of y?

(1) 3|x(square) - 4| = y - 2

(2) |3 - y| = 11

This problem appeared on my test. I couldn't figure out why the answer is C.

I can't tell what this question is asking. Whatever symbols you've used haven't rendered correctly. What is - supposed to represent? On my machine it looks like three unrelated and non-mathematical symbols. When you clarify, it will also help if you let us know what you did on this problem so we can help you most effectively.

Here's an existing thread on this problem:
ds-absolute-value-equation-what-is-the-value-of-y-t13327.html

The weird characters are appearing in that thread, too. From context, it's obvious that they're meant to be minus signs——the software is just doing something screwy to them.

And here's the Google search that found that thread:
site:manhattangmat.com "what is the value of y" 11

Search for things with this kind of search term, and you'll find them quite easily. (If you don't know what "site:" does, just look at this example and it should be pretty clear. Make sure there is no space between site: and the domain name.)

This thread is now locked; please post any questions on the existing thread(s). Thanks.
