Possible Skewed Test Results

by chr2212 Wed Jan 16, 2013 7:36 pm

I recently took my 5th CAT and scored a 45V. However, when I reviewed the Verbal Section, my last five questions were 600-700 level even though the est. %ile was 90+ for the last 15 questions. I assume that this is because MGMAT didn't have anymore 700-800 questions to ask me.

My question is approximately how overinflated do you think these scores are? The reason why I am concerned is because I was scoring 35ish for the previous four CATs, and I was going to use this test as a determiner if it was appropriate to shift my efforts elsewhere. I have been concentrating almost entirely on SC/CR questions and I was expecting my verbal score to increase, but I'm sure these results are a bit optimistic.

Note that 700 is the 90th percentile (meaning, 600-700 range includes Qs in the 90th percentile), and also that the algorithm has a range in which it can select questions - it's not always literally at the exact percentile for your current score. It's quite common to see questions that are "adjacent" to your current scoring level. (The algorithm is pretty complex.)

It was test 5, so it's *possible* that you ran out... but if you were scoring mostly 35s before, then you probably didn't actually run out.

Even if you did, though, it was only on the last 5. In other words, worst case scenario, you still scored in the low 40s at least. And you were at 90+ for the last 15 Qs, even the 700+ ones. So congratulations!! I'd say mission accomplished and time to start focusing in other areas (though, of course, periodicially refreshing and building on these skills). :)
