Pliz advice (MBA or not

by baruakwangu Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:16 am

Profile
Bachelors of Arts degree from African Varsity
US permanent resident 1 year

Worked for over two years in non profit sector raising ranks through the time I had the priviledge to lead big development projects.

I have being preparing for the GMAT for a while hoping to start MBA this fall. However I am developing cold feet. I am starting to question my motivation and whether i am being over ambitious and naive.

Since i came to the US feb last year i have been doing menial jobs. I decided to take MBA as a way to hopefully to break into the US job market. My real dream experience would be to get into a firm that does business in Africa and the hopefully being posted back to Africa or after a few years experience in American corporate environment (which I value much) moving back there to start my own business.

My dilema is as an immigrant investing in graduate school is more risky than American nationals and given that i do not have a strong background in business would i be wasting my time and money to get an MBA. Sorry for the strange and long question.

Hello,
Thank y
ou for your inquiry. I think that it’s a good thing that you’re considering whether you really need or want an MBA. That question should be based on your professional experience and your goals. Some positions require or favor MBAs, though it’s not clear to me that you need an MBA to achieve your goals. I think that is the first question you should be asking and if you’re unclear about whether you’ll need an MBA to achieve your goals, you should speak with people who are more knowledgeable.

Once you determine whether you need an MBA, you should think about whether you have the skills and experiences that would make you attractive to an MBA program. You may decide to continue to work for a few more years or change jobs or bolster your academic record. Hope that helps!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
