ESSAY QUESTION:
"Employees should expect no privacy while on the job, even when engaging in personal communication via telephone or e-mail. Employers are paying for their employees' time and have a reasonable expectation that this time is spent solely on work-related activities.""¨"¨Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your views with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

Response:

I disagree to the author's statement that employees should not expect any privacy while on the job. Interfering in privacy of an employee causes employee to lose faith in the company and reduces the productivity of the employee, which is not good for both the company and the employee. However, it is the due diligence of the employee to avoid unnecessary personal conversation if possible.

It a misconeption that the productivity of the employee increases by making him spend more time on work-related activities during office hours. If an employee is worried about his new born baby, or his wife with ill health, how can he concentrate on the work, unless his wife assures him that baby is doing well or she herself is doing well. A personal conversation would always makes an employee to relax and allows him to concentrate on work without any problem.

Employee loses faith in the employer who does not believe in his employees. An employee becomes more self-conscious if he is closely monitored, which reduces his productivity. An employee, who cannot tolerate this monitoring system will try to move out of the company, as a result attrition rate increases. The feeling of responsibility subsides in an employee and one would start working merely to impress the employer.

Morever, humans are not mere machines to switch on completely to professional mode and leave out the personal mode. It is a general tendency of any person to think about an issue which is troubling oneself. May it be a personal problem or a professional problem. It is highly probable that employee thinks about the work, even when at home, if the issue is troubling him, and similarly employee may think about an issue of his personal life, when at office, which might need a conversation with a family member or friend to resolve.

However, it is the duty of the employee to avoid unnecessary personal conversation. If the freedom is mis-utilised, in most of the cases, it reflects by his/her poor performance. It is also reasonable on an employee's behalf to try not to disturb their colleagues with his/her personal conversation.

Owing to the above reasons, It is not a right move on an employer's part to interfere the privacy of the employee, for it might affect the employee's performance and might create ill-will against employees. It is highly probable that employee does not perform well, if one misuses the freedom, hence the monitoring is a mere waste of time. So I conclude saying that interfering privacy of an employee is not recommendable.

I think it should be a 5.

Sentence structure should be improved.
