Please guide me in college selection

by shrutipurohit Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:12 am

Hi, I am Shruti and have scored 660 (49Q, 31V) in GMAT.

Also, I have taken TOEFL recently and have scored a 117 (28-Writing, 29-Reading, 30-Listening and 30-Speaking)

The question: Can a good TOEFL score compensate for a low verbal GMAT score even in slightest of the ways?

I know it's a bit improbable to get any good school from rank 15 to rank 50 with this kinda score. But I want to try my best at application and right school selection.

I have a 2.2 years of work experience in an Automobile major (Mahindra and Mahindra) in Sales and Marketing, ranging from -----Channel sales (1 year),
--Sales planning and sales support (8 monce) and now
--Business Development along with a cross functional project in ---Supply chain -'Warehouse network re engineering' for MNM. I am also assisting Sr. VP, Sales of Mahindra Navistar.

---Extra curriculars include starting an entrepreneurship club in college and building a team of 30 executives starting with 2.
---I also did a technical project which was funded by Govt. of India under Technology entrepreneurship program during College.
---I was awarded High performer of the year by my company.

Could you please suggest a few colleges for which I am a fit.
I have considered applying in MBA program in some of these:
--Lancaster Univ,
--Vanderbilt,
--Boston Univ,
--Thundirbird,
--SDA Bocconi (Italy),
--UK University,
--NUS (as its free to apply :P)
--Nanyang (though its v improbable)

Am I going right?

Waiting eagerly for your response.

Hi! I don't think you can assume that a strong TOEFL score will counter a weak verbal score on your GMAT. That being said, many business schools are more focused on the quantitative component of the GMAT than they are on the verbal part. As for the schools you are interested in, your scores are within the range of some on your list. I am most familiar with U.S.-based programs, so those are all I can speak about.

Outside of your scores, I looks like you have some strong work experience. As you pull together your applications, I encourage you to focus on your accomplishments at work, not your responsibilities. That will allow you to showcase your leadership potential.

Best of luck!

Hi Rachel, Thanks a lot for the reply.
However, if you could name a few schools (from my list or outside the list) that I should be focusing on, it would be a great help. I have zeroed in on Boston University. Vanderbilt, Thunderbird, SDA bocconi have started seeming to be a distant dream now... :/

Please suggest some Univ in US that are practically in my reach.
I would put the pertinent essay for your better understanding of my profile and strengths.

Hi! It is very difficult for me to tell you what schools are right for you. So much of that has to do with personal preferences - such as where you want to live, and what kind of programs the schools offer.

Best of luck,

I have a GMAT score of 670, and am applying for Boston University, Vanderbilt, University of Illinois, UMass and Northeastern. I have 2 years full time experience alongside 14 months of part-time TA experience. How good are my chances at Vandy and BU??
