by SweetAntidote Fri Aug 01, 2008 12:25 am

Hi can you please evaluate my profile? Thank you for the advice in advance :-)

Female, 29, Asian

Nationality: Taiwan (US permanent resident)

Education:
undergrad: B.S. in Management Information Science
B.A. in Geographic Information Science
Certification in Geographic Information Technology
University of Massachusetts, Boston
GPA 3.6

Grad: Master of Engineering in Computer Science from Cornell
GPA: 3.5
GMAT: 710 / 5.5

Work experience 6.5 years

1) 3.5 in a digital security company as support engineer.

-Supported Fortune 500 clients on daily basis. Helped the company start a new branch office in Hong Kong by organizing the logistics and hiring new employees.

2) 3 years as software developer for a tier 1 investment bank in NYC

- Developed reference data services that manages security definition and pricing data such as yield curve, corporate action and currency exchange rates. Shortly after joining the firm I was put in charge of a vital security data services. A responsibility rarely given to new college hires.

-Developed accounting software for equity derivatives division.
One year after joining the team I became the go-to person and serve as the contact for business users, support and QAs even though there are few older and more experienced members on my team.

Recently entrusted with the role of project manager. I lead and oversee progress of development projects of the team, ensuring that commitments to clients are met on timely basis and the specification are implemented as designed.

Career progression:

1) Promoted to assistant vice president in 2 years
2) 2 divisional awards as one of the most outstanding employees within 3 years nominated by different team managers

Extra curricular activities:

Active participant in the bank's direct hire program as the campus recruiter for 3 years. Hired and mentored full time recruits and interns. Gave speeches and lead info-sessions for new grads.

4) Active participant in the company's Asian American social network as an event organizer

One of my undergraduate majors was MIS, which is part business and part computer science. As a result I have trainings in the basic economic, finance and accounting principles. I have taken most of the courses a student of business major would need to complete for the first 2 years of college. Therefore I would not strictly quality myself as hardcore programmer. My skill sets are more of a blend between hard IT skills and the soft business skills.

Why MBA?

I am hoping to use MBA to switch my career to investment banking.

For this reason, it seems the more finance oriented programs would better fit my goal.

Target schools:
Columbia, NYU, Wharton, Harvard, MIT, Yale

Can you please evaluate my profile and advice on the chances with above schools?

Thanks!

Thank you for your inquiry.

Clearly, between your grades, GMAT, rapid career progression and international/gender representation, you have a solid foundation for your candidacy. I am a bit concerned that your extras are light, though your mentorship and internal training will be appreciated. Your challenge will be to break the mould of the software developer and make your experience more managerial, if possible. If you can focus on your project management experiences, you should have a chance at your top tier, with the exception of Harvard and Wharton. I don’t see anything that is safe on your list though.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Shinewald
