Please Evaluate my profile

by utkarshrawal89 Tue Jan 15, 2013 2:54 pm

I would appreciate if you can evaluate my profile and let me know what I need to do in order to get into a top school

Basic demographic info:
23, Male, Indian

Educational Background:
Undergrad : Mechanical Engineering from a State University in India (GPA 3.6)
Grad: Mechanical Engineering from UPenn (GPA 3.2)
GMAT: 740

I do not intent to apply straight away as I do not have work experience but I would like to apply to the likes of Harvard, Stanford, Wharton 3-4 years down the line. I have a few questions regarding the same:
- I have job offers in the US as well as in India with low profile companies. Would work experience in India kill my chances of getting into a top school?
- What matters more - the company or the job profile?
- Is my Grad GPA too low? bearing in mind the fact that Masters in engineering is a very rigorous program at Upenn.
- Having a grad degree from an Ivy school increase my chances?
- What sort of a job profile should I have to crack these schools?

Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Thanks for sharing. Congrats on the GMAT!

Here are my answers to your questions:

1. Taking a job in India would not help your case :/ I hate to say that, but the reality is that right now your profile is that of an Indian Male engineer (overrepresented demographic in the applicant pool), and going back to India would only push you further into that category. (Personal advice: That said, if you want to go back to India, you certainly should... my personal advice would be to not let a plan for business school 3-4 years down the road determine EVERYTHING you do right now... what if your plan changes? Would you regret not going back to India?)

2. The job profile matters more than the company, usually, but it all depends on the specifics. Would a manager role at a small company be better than an admin role at a large, yes? :)

3. I wouldn't worry about the grad GPA. Not much you can do about that now anyway :) And, I do think that the rigor of your program will be taken into consideration and that your GMAT shows you're very capable.

4. Maybe marginally increases your chances, but probably not much.

5. Highly team oriented, ideally not an engineering role but more of a business role, opportunities to lead and manage projects and project teams, engage with high profile clients, etc.

Good luck!
Mili
