Please evaluate my profile

by annmary.tomy07 Wed Jun 22, 2011 10:42 am

Hello,

I just got a 720 (Q 49, V 40) score on GMAT. I am aiming for the top BSchools in US ( HBS, MIT, Wharton etc) for the batch of Fall 2012.

I have 3.5 gpa in undergraduate from an Indian university and passed with 2nd rank. I also have a total of 3 years of IT experience in India - around 2 years in a reputable MNC and the rest in a startup. But for the past one year I am unemployed as I am in US on a dependent visa. Will this go against me in my application?

Please assess my chances. Also please let me know if I need to appear for TOEFL.

Thanks

Hi annmary.tomy07,

Thanks for writing in. You will need to explain your recent period of unemployment in the work experience section or in the optional essay. It may not work against you directly but it's now one less year of experience you have to support your candidacy, if that makes sense. TOEFL is something you should ask the individual schools about, as I'm not sure what the qualifications would be in your case.

As for an overall profile check, your academics seem competitive but I would need to know a lot more about your work experience and extracurriculars to make an informed opinion on your chances at top U.S. schools. Remember Indian candidates with IT backgrounds are very over-represented, so the schools put scrutiny on what separates you from your peers, which you'll need to make clear in your essays.

Good luck!
