Hi,

I request you please evaluate my profile and suggest some good B-Schools in USA where I stand a chance -

AGE - 24 years
Gender - Male
Nationality - Indian

GMAT Score - 660 (Q50 V30 AWA 5)

Planned Admission - Fall 2010

Work Experience - 30 months(till today) , IT Consulting MNC.
- Worked on projects with clients like Govt. of County of Los Angles and Wells Fargo Bank.
- Recognised for leadership, initiative and communication skills.
- Mentored the new hires to the team.

Extra Curricular and Community Service -
- Associated with a non Profit institution working for imparting education for physcially impaired children.
- Active Member of CSR(Corporate Social Responsibility) club of the organiztion I work for.
- Active Participation in several events organized for charity or for raising funds for under privleged.
- Member of sports team (Table Tennis & Cricket) and represented the team in several tournaments.

Why MBA ?
- I want to make a career shift from a hard core technical role to roles which involve more of real life business functions - like marketing, consulting, strategy.

Please suggest some good B schools which I can target- my primary preference would be a B- School with a good ROI where in I can get good returns on the amount I invest in my education. And ones which provide good empoyment prospects.

I am also confused whether I should attempt taking GMAT again - what do you suggest ?

Thanks,
Sam

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. Without considering your grades (I don't have your undergraduate grades), you seem to have a strong profile in terms of a robust history of community service and non-professional interests as well as a history of achievement at work. I recommend that you narrow down your post MBA goals since "marketing, consulting and strategy" is pretty broad. You’ll want to present a more specific career goal, which will allow you to make the argument for why you want to get an MBA and attend the specific school(s) you apply to. Measuring ROI or employment prospects of individual business schools is very hard to do. One thing that you might do is look at the statistics of business schools record of employment for recent graduates. They typically report rates of employment rates of new alumni, a few months after their graduation. The other thing that you can do is look at the industries and even specific companies that students go to after graduating to see if they fit with your interests.

Recommending a list of business schools that you might consider is difficult for me to do given the criteria that you have stated. When choosing schools to apply to, you should consider your professional goals and research the professional specializations of different schools to determine what would be a good fit for you. You might also consider the size/location of the alumni community, size of the class, curriculum and location. If you are just beginning your search and want to look at the profiles of a large number of MBA programs, I recommend reading the profiles developed by publications like BusinessWeek or US News & World Report.

The answer to the question of whether you should retake your GMAT depends on the schools that interest you. If your current GMAT score is near the average of the schools that you want to apply to, you won’t need to retake the test. However if you are interested in applying to schools that have a higher average GMAT score and you believe that you can improve your current score, then I would recommend retaking it. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
