picking smart numbers strategy

by Eddie Gutia Sun Oct 26, 2014 2:38 pm

hello awesome instructor,

I am targeting a score of 700+ and I often find it difficult and run over time to solve 700 level Quant problems. How important is it to learn the strategy of picking smart numbers to achieve a score greater than 700? Since MGMAT doesn't emphasize on this topic expect in "Fractions, Decimals & Percents" strategy guide, how do you recommend that I practice this strategy? If you think practicing this strategy will be super handy, it would be immensely helpful, if you can direct me to a post that shows the kind of problems smart numbers strategy can be applied on.

Thanks,
Aditya

Hello! If you want a great score on this test, then you definitely want to learn that strategy. I would personally refuse to take the test if they wouldn't let me use those strategies; certainly, I wouldn't score in the 99th percentile. :)

There are other important strategies as well - you can find a discussion of the main ones here:

For some of those, I used pretty hard problems. In general, learn how to use a strategy on easier problems first, then work your way up.
