I have conflicting reports on what I should do with my optional essay. I need to write a few sentences about my grades and recommenders, but should I attempt to turn the negative into a positive with a short paragraph on my "fit"? Or is it best to keep it short and address the potential weaknesses?

The optional essay isn't the place to spin - it'll be very easy to tell that you're trying to turn a negative into a positive. It's a place to acknowledge and explain the facts, without getting defensive - keep it short.
