OG - 12 question.

by jahnavi_p Sun Jul 11, 2010 1:52 pm

Source: OG 12 No. 6

[deleted because problem is from a banned source - see below]

The explanation given in OG for option D is : 'them' seems to refer to tourists.
However, E has the same construction of 'moisture exhaled by tourists' (as a noun modifier), yet OG says that 'them' clearly refers to 'chambers'.

What is the correct reason for E as the right option.?

Are you sure that the OG says that D is the right answer
Quick finder - ..... and fungus was growing . So the thing on the other side of and needs to have a structure consisting of a noun + verb + verb’ing .
Ofcourse A is incorrect because "which" modifies the tourists which is incorrect .

The correct answer is E. However, OG explanation for D and E is different although both the options have similar construction as below:

D: "moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them" - them seems to refer to tourists which is incorrect.

E: "moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them" - here also, 'them' seems to refer to tourists. However OG states that 'them' clearly refers to 'chambers'!

I am not too convinced by OG explanation and probably will not be able to figure out the correct answer in the real test.
Experts- please give your comments.

Hi Jahnavi,

You can eliminate option D because there is a parallelism issue
in the second part of the sentence.

Sentence 1 and Sentence 2.
the verbs in the Sentence 1 and Sentence 2 must be parallel.
When a coordinating conjunction "and" is used make sure that the subject and verb are parallel in both the sentences.

Thanks and Regards,
Partha.

This one is totally about parallelism; thanks for the explanation, Partha..
