Need workaround for time management in RC

by sudhanshu.gangele Thu Jul 04, 2013 12:07 pm

I have given GMAT last year and got 620 . I want to break barrier of 700. I am scoring now 670- 680 . I have issue with time management in RC's. If I do RC's without time constraint I get around 70-80 % correct but when I give test I mess up with time. I have improved on SC ,CR but I dont have access on how to improve here. My score is getting impacted heavily due to RC.

Few things I did for RC are:
Reading columns from newspapers daily and making my own point of view.
Used Reading comprehension book by Manhattan .
Thursdays with Ron Purewal recordings.
OG 11,12,13 ,2nd edition of verbal
Manhattan tests.

But I am worried about my speed.
To let you know it is due to RC I have postponed my GMAT from June to October .Please suggest me if any other tips that can help me. Am I on the right way?

Your suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Regards
Sud

Yes, reading speed can be a big problem on RC.

First, read this (literally, right now):
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... lly-tests/

The main takeaway there is that you are not going to get everything right and you should just let some questions go - fast.

You can't do that on an entire RC passage (too many Qs in a row), so the next task is to learn what to read and what NOT to read on RC:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... -passages/
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... -passages/

In particular, tough science / technical passages:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... -passages/

Here's a series of 3 articles, all on the same tough passage:
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... -passages/
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... m-passage/
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... m-passage/

So, first, you're learning how to get through the reading stage with the main idea / point and the main contrasts or changes of direction - but without all of the detail.

Then, you're learning how to answer *some* of the questions, but also how / when to guess on some - so, on a tough passage, you might decide to skip 1 or 2 of the questions and just go for the main idea question and a specific question about the 1st paragraph, which you sort of understood, but not the 3rd paragraph, which was way too hard.

If you are *ever* losing points at the end of the section on CR and SC simply because you are low on time due to extra time spent earlier in the section, learn to cut yourself off faster on the hardest questions so that you don't lose points at the end just due to speed and careless mistakes. Read the first article above again - and again! - until you internalize this. :)

Try that out and let me know how it goes.
