need advice from admission consultants

by djkstra Sat Jul 12, 2008 6:51 am

Hi,

I have already written gmat 5 times. Here are my scores. shame!. I am going for 6th round to get 700+.

So fact is , i am weak in verbal (I should say not quick and smart enough for gmat) and I panic every time in verbal section though i did well in prep tests. I never really learnt the tricks to beat gmat. I prepared for 4-8 weeks for each time and every time i sucked big time in verbal because of time management and nervousness. This time I am getting MGMAT Class room course and plan to prepare really well.

Test Date (MM/DD/YY) Verbal Quant Total AWA
08/21/06 28 / 51% 50 / 95% 660 / 86% 5.0 / 73%
02/16/06 31 /61% 44 /73% 620 / 76% 5.0 / 73%
11/24/04 18 /16% 49 / 90% 560 / 58% 4.5 / 55%
11/29/03 26 /43% 49 / 90% 620 / 76% 4.0 / 34%
01/11/02 17 /13% 42 / 67% 490 / 36% 4.5 / 55%

If I get 80+% in verbal and 80+% in quant this time, how bad these old scores will look on my application ? I am an engineering graduate with average GPA and 10 years of very good experience.

Do I have any chance of getting into top 15-30 business schools ? So far, gmat is the worst failure in my life. I am so pissed at this gmat that I have decided to write until I cross 80% on verbal and getting 80% in verbal has become more important than getting into MBA school. :).

Please share your brutally honest opinions. Thanks in advance.

Interesting...

You said you have over 10 years of experience...

Adm Committee will truly value your work experience much more than your GMAT score, at least that's how you have to see if for yourself and believe it so you can sell yourself to the MBA program you want to apply for. Use it to your advantage.

I got a 590 in my 1st attempt and for me this was enough, I have 5 years of experience and my career achievements pretty much speak for themselves and show how much of a contribution I can deliver to any MBA program (at least this is my thinking and belief), I was applying for Cornell (top 30 B-school) and was more than likely to be accepted (initial gut feeling and discussion with admissions officer) but decided to go for a local state university.

In short... don't put too much pressure on yourself with the GMAT.

djkstra,

I would actually recommend asking your question in the Ask an Admissions Consultant section of the forums to receive a more detailed response from an expert consultant. They will be much better suited to help you in your current situation.

Also, scores are only valid for 5 years, so the one you listed from 2002 is no longer on your record! Yes, talk to the admissions people and ask them what they think. I can tell you right now, though, that they'll ask you one additional question before they can advise you: where are you planning to apply? If they don't know where you're planning to apply, they can't tell whether your score is likely to be sufficient! :)

Dear djkstra

There is nothing to be ashamed about. 660 is a great score. If it helps, I am on my 7th attempt. I hope 6th is your last attempt and that you get the score you want. Cheers!

We don't know the contact info of individual posters (and, even if we did, we couldn't share it due to privacy laws). Sorry. :(

Hi Suresh,

Just sent you an e-mail.

I will gladly extend a helping hand to you regarding any questions you may have regarding your profile. Note, I am not an admissions consultant nor anything close to it. I just believe in that we should be able to communicate strongly our strengths/skills/abilities and leverage from our opportunities (i.e. weaknesses) to put together a winning application.

Good Luck
