Narwhals can be called whales of ice: in icy channels, ponds and ice-shielded bays they seek sanctuary from killer whales, their chief predator, and their annual migrations following the seasonal rhythm of advancing and retreating ice.

A. their annual migrations following
B. their annual migrations which follow
C. their annual migrations follow
D. whose annual migrations following
E. whose annual migrations follow

Is ,and any indication that complete sentence( Subject+Verb) is to follow?
Can it be taken as any clue/ indication?

Thank you very much.
Have a nice day.

not necessarily—but, if you have even a basic understanding of what this sentence means, you'll already know EXACTLY what things need to be parallel. that will determine all of those structural issues already.

remember, the FIRST STEP of ANY sentence correction problem is to FIGURE OUT THE EXACT INTENDED MEANING of the sentence!

Hi Ron,

I thought "their" annual migrations can refer to either narwhals or the killer whales.
Because the first "their" chief predator is clearly referring to Narwhals, all the other"their"s in the sentence must refer to the same antecedent? Is that why this is a correct usage?

ThankYou!!

if the meaning of the pronoun is clear in context, then the pronoun is fine.

"pronoun ambiguity" is NOT tested on this exam. DO NOT think about whether a pronoun is "ambiguous".
