My profile and chances

by MBA Hopeful Thu May 15, 2008 10:02 am

Hello

I took my GMAT a couple of weeks back and scored a 700( V 34 and Q 50). Does the disparity in my V & Q scores pose a problem? My profile is as below

Age 28
M.S in Elec Engg from University of Missouri ( GPA of 3.4)
4 yrs of FT experience at present.
B.S in Electrical Engg from Osmania University in India (GPA of 3.6)

I live in NYC and was hoping to get into NYU, CBS, Yale to avoid relocation. What are my chances at these universities. Also, where can find out a university's strong points with respect to a particular program, say how do I know which universities are good for Marketing, Finance etc..

Can you also list some universities where I have a decent chance to get into?

Thank you for your inquiry.

I can certainly answer your GMAT question. With respect to the disparity in your scores, you are fortunate that your quant scores is the higher of the two. While it would obviously be better if they were balanced a bit more, your quant score reveals that you should be able to handle the rigors of an MBA program.

As for your question on your profile, I would need more information. What is the nature of your work? Have you been promoted? What community activities are you involved in? Etc.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I work for a Europe based start up company in NJ. I joined the company as an R&D engineer in 2006 and at present I am the R&D project manager, I had 2 significant raises (both financially and responsibility wise) in these 2 years. I started with pure engineering work in automotive electronics. At present I do a lot of project management in terms of managing work between our US and European offices.

I am involved with a couple NGOs one that works on the religious/spiritual front and one that works on social service with respect to education of the under privileged in India. Frankly, I don't have a very aggressive set of extra curricular activities, especially socially relevant ones.

I saw from one of your earlier posts that age is a big factor too? Is it age or work experience? Because I pursued an MS, I only have 4 yrs of FT experience but I am already 28 yrs. Can you also shed some light on that.

Thank you for your response.

I don’t think that you need to worry that much about age. At 28, you certainly have significant time ahead of you in your career. Further, those that need to worry are those whose careers have stalled and you seem to be taking on more and more responsibility. With your grades, 700 GMAT, promotions, international experience and your involvement with a couple of NGOS, you should be a reasonable candidate at NYU. I think that Yale and CBS will be a bit more of a stretch. If you are interested in CBS, definitely apply early.

Your candidacy will hinge on your ability to showcase your managerial and international experience and then build a more diversified profile via your experience with the NGOs. Essentially, you are a borderline candidate whose application will make all the difference.
