Manhattan GMAT solution : Helen will will feel better if she swallows this pill
My solution : Helen would feel better if she swallows this pill.
My question:
- why does GMAT change would to will when it wasnt even underlined ?
- Is my solution a gramatical alternative ?
Yours doesn't work.
"If she swallows" implies that "she swallows" is
a reasonable possibility"”i.e., neither remote nor impossible.
In this case, the future is used for the consequences.
Unless the sentence is in the
past (which is something altogether different), "would" is used only for impossible or extremely unlikely hypotheticals. In such cases, the present tense is changed to something that resembles the past tense.
