MGMAT CAT Scoring algorithm

by vik123 Thu Aug 07, 2008 9:39 pm

Hi,

I have now taken 3 MGMAT CATs and 1 GMAT-Prep CAT. The following are my scores so far:

GMAT-prep (7/28) - 740 (Q50, V41)
MGMAT-1 (7/31) - 710 (Q48, V38)
MGMAT-2 (8/3) - 750 (Q48, V45)
MGMAT-3 (8/7) - 770 (Q51, V44)

How accurate is the MGMAT scoring algorithm relative to the GMAT algorithm?

I was especially surprised by my score of 51 on the Quant section on my last CAT. I had 11 questions wrong (8 of which at an average of 750 and 3 at an average of 720). How can I get such a high score inspite of 11 mistakes?

On the GMAT prep test, I had 8 questions wrong in the Quant section and got a score of 50.

All in all I am pretty happy with the MGMAT tests. Although the quant is tougher than GMAT prep and OG11, I think I am learning.

Verbal is I think OK.

Thanks,
Vikram

Hi Vikram,

With regard to your latter question about the strange score you received based on your performance, I would like to refer you to this thread: http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/str ... t4201.html. It contains a detailed description of why ManhattanGMAT CATs operate in that manner.

Now, congrats on the GMATPrep score! That score is a fairly accurate indicator of how you will perform on test day, so you should be very prod of your high score! The scoring algorithm on the GMATPrep software is calibrated by GMAC, the organization that administers the test. The algorithm on our tests is calibrated by ManhattanGMAT, but our curriculum development department uses various clues that GMAC drops about how they program their own algorithm and every month, we re-calibrate our CAT pool based on our students' results on real exams.

However, your 740 indicates to me that you are ready to take the test. This should be your next step. Make a reservation and good luck!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your encouraging words. I am happy about my first GMAT-prep CAT score, but I think there is still some room for improvement on the Verbal section. I am giving my next GMAT-prep CAT this weekend. Hope I keep up my scoring. I plan to take another MGMAT CAT in the middle of next week.

And Yes I am scheduled to take the GMAT on the 16th of this month.

I have gone through the post you have pointed to. I guess it is fair to say that MGMAT algorithm may not be very accurate in the higher 700 range.

Thanks,
Vikram

I have now taken the last GMAT-prep CAT. I got a 760 (Q50 and V42).

Q50: 6 errors (4 absolutely avoidable)
V42: 8 errors(2 RC and 6 SC) (2-3 avoidable)

The verbal score might be a little skewed given that I got an RC from OG11 which I was vaguely familiar with. I did try to spend about 2 minutes for each of this RC questions to compensate for the familiarity advantage. In any case I did have more than 12 minutes left.

I am shooting for something around 740-750. Hope I can keep up :)

I will get back to the forum with my result.
