MGMAT Advanced Quant : CH-2- In Action: Q-13

by himanshu_chauhan Mon Apr 23, 2012 3:31 am

1) In Action: question 13

Given answer is B) 24/49

But if we solve by normal method, then two square makes 3-4-5 triangle making side of inscribed square = 5

So answer becomes 25/49 i.e. D)

Please clarify

2) Page-60/ Try-It #2-8
Here we are asked that how many pairs of loafers does he intend to repair tomorrow . We considered that value as x+1

Here we solved for x, which =3

So answer should be D)4 instead of c) as given in the book.

Please clarify

Sure. The side of the big square is 7, so the area of the big square is 49. I'm pretty sure by your answer that you're good with that. :-)

Now, the question is what fraction of the big square is shaded? Notice that each shaded triangle will have a base of 3 and a height of 4. Thus, using the area of a triangle theorem, (b*h)/2, (3*4)/2 is 6. There are four triangles, each of which will have an area of 6. Thus the shaded area is 24/49.

You could also use the information you suggested. You discover that each side of the smaller white square is 5, so it's area is 25. Subtract 25 from 49 to get the area of the shaded region, 24. Again, 24/49 of the area is shaded.

I think that you got tripped up on the wording. It says that he charges n dollars to repair a pair of loafers. Then it says IF he charged differently he'd have to repair one more pair of loafers. That IF is not definite, so we have to go with what is, which is the original number of loafers he plans to repair.

I hope that this helps--it appears that you were able to solve just fine. :-)

Hi himanshu,
Going forward, will you please post each question separately? Thanks! Answers above in blue.
