meetign deadlines

by Jamil Fri Jan 21, 2011 1:54 am

Hello,
I am interested in meeting USC Marshall's Round 3 Full time MBA deadline. I would like insights regarding prioritization and time management that meet aggressive deadlines and best strengthens my application.

The deadline is March 15th. I am attending a GMAT course that ends march 6th and I intend to take the test march 11th. I have scored 550-630 on the GMAT before taking the course. I am 3 weeks into the course, focusing my time on the homework and therefore didn't start essays or visit the campus. I don't have a single area of MBA focus identified (I am interested in organizational development, marketing and Enterpreneurship). My questions, in light of the deadlines are
- Is it worth spending time to visit the campus
- Should I identify a single area of focus before applying
- How much time should I spend between GMAT and Essays? So far I've given the GMAT priority. - When should I start the essays?
Any insights you have that would strengthen my application woudl be appreciated
Thanks
Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

Thanks for writing in. It will likely be a race to the finish given the information you provided. My advice is you need to equally split your time right now between GMAT and essays. Marshall's median GMAT is a 690 so without improvement from your pre-course score you'll be coming in with a position of weakness on GMAT -- not an easy feat to begin with, but especially in R3.

But if you wait until March 11 to start your essays they will likely be rushed and unfocused. I'd advise you to start ASAP on those as well. It's likely best to demonstrate what your highest academic priority would be at Marshall, but you can also mention the other areas that you would pursue,

As for the campus visit, I don't know where you live so it depends on how much of an inconvenience it would be to visit USC. The actual campus visit is only a few hours, so if you live nearby it should be doable, but if it involves extensive travel, I think that should fall in priority behind GMAT/essays.

Good luck!
