MBA-for professionals with 7+yrs of experience

by lmiller.1102 Mon May 07, 2012 5:05 pm

Hi,

I have been on the fence with the decision to do my MBA.
I'm currently an engineering professional working for an IT consulting and Services Company.I want to move into management consulting.

Does it make sense to further my studies in a full time MBA program.
Will the 2 years taken for an MBA be a dent in my work experience.
At the end of the MBA program would my 7yrs of work experience hold weight against say may be a graduate with 3-4 years of experience.

Thanks
rachel

Hi! For a full-time MBA program, your experience (and age) is on the higher end. That, however, doesn't mean that an MBA isn't right for you. First, you could apply for a full-time program if you could establish that you need the MBA to make the transition into management consulting, and you need the skills you build in business school to make that happen. You might also want to consider a part-time MBA program. Then your work experience actually helps your profile, and you can position yourself to change careers (though I will point out that you will have to do a lot of work to facilitate that career shift since most recruiters don't target part-time MBAs).

Best of luck,

Hi Rachel,

Thanks a lot for the information.
The reason i'm not pursuing a partime MBA is for the fact that it is not considered the same as a fulltime one coupled with my experience.
And also not enough for a career shift.

Do you think my chances of getting in with the experience i have is bleek.
