solution : Mary buys cookies made with sugarFree, an artificial sweetner, which tastes as sweet as the corn syrup that her brother loves but which there are fewer calories than in an equivalent amount of syrup.

my question : where cant modify a metophorical place so we should use in which rather than where. so can this be also the possible solution :

Okay, first this is problem 5 from page 93, not problem 9 from page 113. Second, your solution as posted is not transcribed correctly from the book. Please pay attention to what you are writing, because it really wastes our time when you do not copy problems and problem locations accurately. If i hadn't known exactly where this problem was in the book, you would not have gotten your question answered..

As to your question, no. "in which" is not parallel to "which", so the correct answer is as written in the book (NOT as you wrote it above)..

i wrote the wrong edition of my book...its 3rd edition
so please tell me the answer to it as the answer written in my book is same as i had written in the post.

'in which' CAN NOT be used here - 2 Reasons

1. The pronoun's antecedent is Sugarfree.
'Mary buys cookies made with sugarFree' is not metaphorical construction so 'in which' CAN NOT be used here.
2. This is a parallel construction:
Mary buys cookies made with sugarFree, an artificial sweetener, which X but which Y

both of Parallel parts start with 'Which'

Thanks, guptanisheet. i believe the original poster's question has been answered. If the question has changed between editions, that means it was probably correct in the first version. That's why we update these things..

"According to meaning" should never be used to make grammar decisions. The rules regarding the use of "which" make it very clear that we are not referring to cookies here. On top of that, there is nothing in the meaning of this sentence that should lead you to think we are talking about cookies..
