Marshall MBA Essay Topic Query

by shrikantbhaiya Sun Jan 09, 2011 12:13 pm

Dear Sir,

I am applying to Marshall MBA full time course. I came across the topic "An entrepreneur you admire" (250 words).

As 250 words is too less to write about any entrepreneur, I just wanted to know What things they are expecting from the essay.
Which topics can I cover. His life chart or his companies or my opinion about the work he did.

Even in these things what is more crucial which should be covered.

Please answer it as soon as possible since the deadline is on 15th Jan.

Regards,
Shrikant

Hi Shrikant,

Thanks for writing in. Whether or not 250 words is enough space, it is the word count the schools wants so you need to conform to it. The most important thing is the WHY you admire this person. Let's take Steve Jobs for example.

Option 1: I admire Steve Jobs because he invented many great products I use, like the iPad.
Option 2: I admire Steve Jobs because he had the tenacity to build his company from scratch, the resolve to return to Apple after his own company let him go, and the vision to bring it to a level no one thought possible.

See how Option 1 is a statement of fact, whereas Option 2 sets you up to explain WHY you admire him. Even when you delve further into this, you want to avoid simple facts that anyone could find on Wikipedia, and instead focus on why your choice connects to you personally. This is not a research paper, rather a personal essay.

Good luck!
