Low AWA Score

by dmittal2000 Fri Jul 09, 2010 6:39 pm

Hi,

I took GMAT couple of days ago and scored a 740 (51 Q, 40 V). But scored a 4.5 on AWA. I am a bit concerned about my AWA score.

Could anyone throw some light on this please? Is this low score on AWA going to hamper my application.

Thanks!

Hi dmittal2000,

Congratulations on a great GMAT score. AWA is typically not much of a factor in an admissions decision, and is likely only considered when it's a very high or low score. A 4.5 is usually not an area for concern if the rest of your overall application is strong.

Best of luck,

I scored a 760 overall on the GMAT (47 V, 48 Q), but only a 3.5 on the AWA. I was a political science major at Brown University; I don't understand how this happened. Does it make sense to retake the GMAT?!

Hi Jeremy,

A 760 is a great score. While the AWA score could be a possible ding against you at the highest-ranked schools, I suggest applying your writing talents to your essays instead and showing the schools that you are a strong writer that way.

By retaking the GMAT, you risk a lower overall score (you can't mix and match your score from multiple tests), and it can be difficult to repeat such a high score.

Good luck!
