I'm having some trouble grasping the idea of LEN (Critical Reasoning Book #5)

I was wondering if anyone could help explain how to use it. I understand the purpose in that you attempt to differentiation between two answer choices that are very similar. But I find the concept to be difficult to wrap my head around.

remember, if you want to be sure that an assumption is necessary, you can plug in the opposite of the assumption to the argument and see if the argument fails. LEN is basically just a reminder that you need to be careful when choosing an opposite. remember, the opposite of "LEN is the best way to solve CR problems" is not "LEN is the worst way to solve CR problems". instead, the opposite is "LEN isn't the best way to solve CR problems."
