Last round of Columbia or Yale with help from Consultant?

by rtriguer Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:12 pm

Hi everyone,

My profile: 640 GMAT (MGMAT alumn); 3.0 GPA from Stanford; 6 years of work experience.

So far, I have been admitted to the University of Rochester/Simon School with a partial scholarship and I'm very pleased with the program's potential and the attention from the staff. I have also been admitted to an accelerated 1 year program at USC and got through the interview round at Michigan (no admit however).

At this point, I am very interested in applying and hopefully being admitted to the final round of Columbia for the 15 month program at Columbia and potentially final rounds at Yale. My overall application was solid except I floundered in the interview stage at Michigan.

I feel that Michigan was such a close miss that with a little interview coaching and further honing of my applications I could aim for Columbia or at least Yale. Does anyone feel this is realistic? I would be happy going to Simon both because of the strong quant aspect of the program and connections to NYC but want to be sure I'm not leaving any money on the b-school admissions table.

Any and every insight is helpful and also would be interested in locating an effective Consultant.

Thank you everyone

Hi!! It's always hard to tell what really kept an applicant from being accepted at a certain school. From what you have told me here, I am not sure Columbia is going to be an easy acceptance for you if you solely get your interview skills down. Your GMAT score is outside of the range for Columbia, and your GPA is on the bottom end of its range, too. Yale, also, shouldn't be viewed as a safety - it's a small program and the AdCom is very selective in its acceptances.

What you don't tell me here is what your major was in undergrad or what kind of work you have done for the last six years. A strong application will involve highlighting your accomplishments at both work and through your outside activities, submitting strong recommendations and showing the AdCom that your future career makes sense (we call this career flow because it ties your past to your present to your future).

Best of luck,

Rachel Beck
